This article describes the emerging roles of the systems engineering(SE)function is support- ing enterprise management in information-intensive organizations. "Enterprise Systems En- gineering"(ESE)comprises three major roles or "levels" of systems engineering for successful and efficient development or procurement of large complex systems of systems(SoS). While the authors' experience focuses predominantly on government organizations acting as their own SoS integrators, the SoS ESE concept has generic applicability for any organization, public or private, seeking to attain competitive advantage through leveraging of information tech- nology resources and systems.

Current research efforts in the area of enterprise systems are focusing on the development and standardization of new technologies to sustain the "Future Internet based Enterprise". In this context, emerging Internet technologies are integrated into enterprise information systems in order to provide sustainable business benefits. These new systems have been included in a broad concept of "Future Internet Based Enterprise Systems". The present paper proposes a sensing based approach to the design of Future Internet Based Enterprise Systems. To sustain the seamless integration and system interoperability a framework to integrate the sensing ability with enterprise information systems is discussed.

This article proposes a framework for investigation into 'extended enterprise resilience' based on the key attributes of enterprise resilience in the context of extended enterprises. Such attributes, namely agility, flexibility, adaptability and connectivity, are frequently defined as supporting attributes of enterprise resilience, but the issue is how they can be more effectively applied to extended enterprises. The role of information technology in assisting connectivity and collaboration is frequently recognised as contributing to resilience on all levels, and will likewise be employed on the level of extended enterprise systems. The proposed framework is based on the expanded application of two primary enablers of enterprise resilience: (ⅰ) the capability of an enterprise to connect systems, people, processes and information in a way that allows enterprise to become more connected and responsive to the dynamics of its environment, stakeholders and competitors; (ⅱ) the alignment of information technology with business goals. The former requires inter- and intra-level interoperability and integration within the extended enterprises, and the latter requires modelling of the underlying technology infrastructure and creation of a consolidated view of, and access to, all available resources in the extended enterprises that can be attained by well-defined enterprise architecture.

Collaboration is an extremely useful area for the most of the enterprise systems particularly within Web 2.0 and Enterprise 2.0. The collaboration provides help in enterprise collaboration system (ECS) to achieve the desired goal by unifying completed tasks of employees or people working on a similar or the same task. Thus, the collaboration systems have witnessed significant attention. The ECS provides consistent and off-the-shelf support to processes and managements within organisations. Management techniques of the ECS may be useful to a community which manages ECS systems for collaboration. In this context, this paper focuses on enterprise collaboration system and answers critical questions related to ECS including: 1) what does collaboration really means for an enterprise system; 2) how can the collaboration help to improve internal processes and management of the system; 3) how it is helpful to improve interactions with customers and partners?

The nature of enterprises as systems is considered. This exploration begins with discussion of the work of enterprises, with emphasis on challenges rather than routine operations. This reflects a desire to support enterprises as they address essential challenges. Situations where enterprise transformation is needed to successfully deal with challenges are then discussed. The nature of enterprise transformation is discussed in terms of ends, means, and scope, as well as perspectives, approaches, and solutions. This leads to elaboration of a portfolio of important research issues that suggests a wealth of potential means for supporting people in enterprises to accomplish the work of these enterprises.

Content is simply information that is put to use through the process of repackaging and is then published for a specific purpose (i.e. text, image, 3D data, video, etc.). Organisations deal with various information assets, also known as 'content', to run their business operations and make important decisions. Managing content is always a challenge for an organisation. More content, particularly in digital form, that goes beyond the control of organisations is being produced. Enterprise Content Management (ECM) was initiated to help organisations manage their information assets. Over a period of 25 years, ECM has intermittently been the focus of attention due to difficulties in setting a solid research framework and the vagueness of the term ECM. Therefore, this research aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the ECM literature to identify the current state of knowledge and future research directions. An ECM research framework is proposed to guide the literature review analysis. Based on the analysis, several important observations are highlighted and practical implications for further research are proposed.

Drawing from the institutional theory and resource-based view, we investigated the effects of a firm's activities and levels of enterprise systems adoption and the effectiveness of the enterprise systems in supporting the firm (enterprise systems assimilation) on business performance. Empirical results suggest that institutional forces and IS resources significantly influence the enterprise systems adoption, which indirectly impacts the enterprise systems assimilation. Further, the enterprise systems adoption significantly influences business performance, and the enterprise systems assimilation mediates the effect of the enterprise systems adoption on business performance.

Enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems participate in interoperability projects and this participation sometimes leads to new proposals for the ERP field. The aim of this paper is to identify the role that interoperability plays in the evolution of ERP systems. To go about this, ERP systems have been first identified within interoperability frameworks. Second, the initiatives in the ERP field driven by interoperability requirements have been identified from two perspectives: technological and business. The ERP field is evolving from classical ERP as information system integrators to a new generation of fully interoperable ERP. Interoperability is changing the way of running business, and ERP systems are changing to adapt to the current stream of interoperability.

The 1990s has been a boom period of enterprise systems (ES). Many organizations have experienced the technical, integration and business process re-engineering benefits of implementing ES. As of today, a number of ES have been developed, namely customer relationship management systems (CRM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems. In particular, CRM systems have gained significant interest, both in the industry as well as in the academic area, in the recent years. The understanding of the customer抯 perspective would help to define the CRM systems to better cater to the customers?needs in achieving their loyalty and satisfaction. With a better understanding from the point of the customers, management would be able to plot their directions in their CRM endeavour. Therefore, this research intends to look at CRM systems from the perspective of the customer through the conduct of focus group discussion.

Systems theory is one of the most important and well-used concept to explain the phenomenon in social sciences. Therefore, systems science plays an important role in explaining many of the phenomena in information systems research. Enterprise Systems (ES), Enterprise Information Systems (EIS) and Enterprise Architecture (EA) are three such emerging technologies in which systems’ perspective plays an important role in explaining the growth and development of these technologies. However, there is lack of literature that illustrates the development and the impact of systems science in these three technologies. This research carefully collects and studies 106 existing literature in the field of ES, EA and EIS, and a summary review of all the latest developments in the ways systems theory has been implemented to these three fields as well as different areas of these three technologies. In the conclusion, three future trends are concluded from the review.
